Online consultation
e-Consult is an online service using digital technology to bring choice to patients who want to consult online, and in many cases avoid the need to visit their GP practice altogether.
Patients who submit their symptoms online will get a response typically within 3 working days. This could be advice, signposting to other support, such as their local pharmacy, or being invited for an appointment if necessary. The service also offers around the clock NHS self-help information, signposting to services, and a symptom checker. Patients can also request prescriptions and test results, referral letters and medical reports.

Do you need to see a GP or Advanced Nurse Practitioner in our practice?
Seeing a Doctor
To book an appointment, you can access our online appointment system, or telephone the practice on 01482 692333. You will be asked some questions about your illness so that the urgency can be assessed.
You can also call 111. This service is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year and is intended for ‘urgent but not life-threatening’ health issues and complements the long-established 999 emergency telephone number for more serious matters. The 111 team will assess you and signpost you to the correct service. They do have access to our appointment system and can make you a same day appointment in the practice.
Whilst we aim to run all of our clinics on time, there may be occasions when the surgery is running slightly behind schedule. A clinician is not able to foresee what issues they will be presented with that day, and as such this sometimes leads to the surgery over running. The team are working very hard to ensure you are seen appropriately and we thank you for your patience during these times.
Please remember that an appointment is for one person only and is for one problem. Should you require speaking to a clinician regarding two separate issues, please inform a receptionist so they can offer you a double appointment.
Do I need to see a GP or an Advanced Nurse Practitioner?
Patients with an acute or short term illness, or flare up of a long term illness, may be given an appointment with an advanced nurse practitioner where appropriate. So when you call you will be asked the nature of your call.
What is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner?
Advanced Nurse Practitioners are all trained specialist nurses who have undertaken additional education in order to provide advanced nursing care and prescribe. Nurse Practitioners can provide treatment and advice for many problems for which you may have seen a doctor for in the past.
If your appointment is directed to a Nurse Practitioner, they can assess and examine you, make a diagnosis and provide advice and treatment including a prescription if required. They can make referrals to hospital doctors or other health care professionals and admit patients into hospital when necessary.
Unfortunately, they are unable to legally sign a sick note, so your GP would need to deal with this. They work closely with your GP and liaise frequently with them about your care.
An Advanced Nurse Practitioner can help you with the following (not an exhaustive list):
- Acute back pain, joint sprains
- Shingles
- Rashes
- Oral thrush
- Acute chest infection
- Dizziness, giddiness, unusual headache
- Conjunctivitis, sticky discharging eye, stye
- Diarrhoea, constipation, piles
- Vomiting
- Urinary tract infections, cystitis
- Vaginal thrush soreness, lump or discharge
- Tonsillitis, earache, cough, swollen glands, sinusitis, sore throat, colds and flu like illnesses, raised temperature that shows no improvement after one week of pharmacy care/advice and home treatment.
There are also many other problems that the nurse practitioner is able to help you with.
Some patients, often those with complex and long standing medical problems, may need an appointment with a Doctor. However, the Nurse Practitioner is usually able to assess the situation and in some cases organise initial blood tests and other investigations prior to arranging a follow up appointment.
A – ADVANCED
Advanced Nurse Practitioners are experienced and highly skilled senior nurses with advanced clinical skills to:
- Take a full medical history, carry out physical assessments and examinations
- Make a diagnosis and carry out treatment, including the prescribing of medicines.
- Plan follow up treatment
- Refer patients, where appropriate
N- NURSE (What are their areas of expertise?)
All patients with an acute (or short term) illness will be given access to an appointment with the Nurse Practitioner. They will have access to support from GPs as needed. Where they are unable to deal with a presenting problem, they will refer the patient to the GP. General Practitioners will continue to be available for treating patients who have complex or chronic health needs.
P- PRACTITIONER (What qualifications do Advanced Nurse Practitioners have?)
Advanced Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses with further qualifications at an advanced level. They have at least a Degree in Nursing; some have a Master’s Degree in Advanced Clinical Practice whilst others are working towards it.
All of our practice staff are extremely supportive of the ANP service that we offer.
We hope that you find this service will complement and improve the care that you already receive.
